What Is Paulownia? A “soft” hardwood, Paulownia has been widely used in the orient for fine furniture, musical instruments, carvings and decorative finishes for over 1000 years. Called the “Empress of the Forest” Paulownia trees were planted with the birth of a new child and made into furniture as dowry for new brides. It has a light blond appearance and resembles White Ash. Paulownia is highly stable and lays flat. It remains stable during changes in humidity and experiences little shrinkage or expansion compared to most other woods. It has no pine-like pitch or the extractive bleed associated with cedar and redwood. It is naturally insect resistant and won’t decay under non-ground contact conditions. Paulownia is plantation grown and very environmentally friendly with one of the highest strength to weight ratios of any wood in existence. It is about 2/3 the weight of Eastern White Pine and is extremely cost competitive, meaning more profits for you. DuraPrime bevel is a great value.
